His Medal of Honor Citation was written according to a formula. It's an approximation of events for the medal. It is understated. 25 MoHs were awarded to Custer's troops for the attempted genocide at Battle of the Little Bighorn. We air assaulted into a meadow in War Zone C about four kilometers from Cambodia. There had been signs of NVA activity. Possibly the area should have been b-52 bombed. The Battalion CO and Delta Company CO, both with a week's tenure, wanted to Get Some instead. That's the military. Soldiers down the line don't vote on the mission, they do it. For infantry the stakes are high. No hate for the Commanders. It's war. The afternoon went badly. Within three hours 23 KIA and 65 WIA. Delta Company was gone. John's position was cloesest to a human wave hand-to-hand assault. He held the NVA off. The field was on fire and mortor fire rained down. Many brave NVA who crawled up on him died also. He had two m-60 machine guns and the m-16s of his dead squad members when we found him. He had repelled the attacks. They all died fighting in a remote meadow. Who goes there today? John had only his boots on, his jungle fatigues were burned away when 2nd Platoon recovered his body. Roasted to about medium rare and shot over ten times there was no retreat in him. That's what a hero does. Of course you don't have to be a hero to die in battle.
