Yuri Kochiyama (Mary Nakahara), born in San Pedro,1922, was “provincial, religious, and apolitical” until December 7, 1941, when Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor led to incarceration of 110,000 Japanese Americans by the U.S. Her concentration camp years in segregated Arkansas awakened her to parallels between the Nikkei and African Americans.

After the war she married Bill Kochiyama, veteran of the legendary 100th/442nd JA military unit, and lived in Harlem. A 1963 meeting with Malcolm X further inspired her long history of activism for black liberation, JA Redress and against the Vietnam War, imperialism, and unjust confinement of political prisoners.
She passed away on June 1, 2014, at age 93.
