Mr. Hale, a school teacher from Connecticut, is believed to be America's first spy and at the young age of 21 paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of his country. Hale, who served under General George Washington in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, was captured during an undercover mission behind British lines in 1776. He was promptly executed for his act of treason. This statue depicts Hale's final moments. Inscribed at the statue's base are his final words: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." . . . Today, officers pay a visit to Mr. Hale's statue before heading overseas on their next assignment, leaving behind 76 cents in a nod to the year of his execution.
