In 1892, three close friends of the journalist Ida B. Wells—Calvin McDowell, Thomas Moss, and Will Stewart—were lynched because they owned a grocery store that competed for customers and profits with a white grocery store in the same community. Her horror and anger following her friends’ murders inspired Wells to write about lynching and publish the names of victims so they wouldn't be forgotten.⁣

Ida’s anti-lynching editorials were met with death threats against her across the South, and a white mob destroyed her newspaper office. Even after that, she published pamphlets that called out lynching for what it was: racial violence intended to suppress the economic and political progress of black Americans.⁣

Wells was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer last week. Just three days later, two white men in Georgia were arrested for chasing down and murdering a black man who had gone out for a jog. His name was Ahmaud Arbery. ⁣

“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them,” Wells said. In her lifetime, she fought against white supremacy and for freedom of the press. Her legacy is carried on by journalists and advocates who are holding the powerful accountable just as she did. The work continues.
