A few weeks into quarantine my wife dug out an ancient set of watercolors and a tiny brush and just decided to get going. She claims to have never painted before, or hasn’t in 20 years. But here is some recent work, stretching back a mere five weeks to her first painting ever. She paints in between endless requests for snacks, butt wipes, water, iPad, change the show, fix my toy, I spilled this, bad news, worse news, I don’t want to nap, why can’t I see my friends, play with me I’m an astronaut, a baby bear, Elsa, Olaf, super girl, scary dinosaur, why can’t I have another treat, I want to go outside, I never want to go outside, I hate what you cooked, can I have more pasta, watch me dance, come see how many bubbles I have, look what’s on my brother’s face, can we get ice cream when Coronavirus is over, when is Coronavirus over? She finds the time to paint and I scavenge the street for frames. It is wild how good she is, and it’s amazing to witness someone in real time finding a passion or a hobby or a medium-term thrill or all of the above. The parenting is relentless and mostly thankless these days, but my kids are ok. They love each other and they love us. And they love her paintings. And I love her paintings. And I love her.
