Once a year we chose three outfits from the Sears catalogue. But when the need arose I would hear the intermittent humming of my mother’s Kenmore. I remember my mother sewing sometimes until 3 am so I would have something to wear to a special school or social event the following day. Days ago I didn’t know how to sew. I did have a sewing machine sitting in the way back of a closet, in its box, nearly brand spanking new, holding a full spool. It was waiting for me. Since the days when I thought just maybe I would give a try, it’s been waiting for me. But I was always working. Now I’m taking the time to work at other things. I made some masks from the Olsen pattern, pockets for filters. I messed up a lot. I mess up a lot. Crazy, crooked seams. The House of Dior will not come calling anytime soon. But when I wear my mask I wear it out of Love, not out of Fear. I wear it for my family, for your family.
