But my parents knew the importance of music and buying cds and records from our local record shop. Once a month, I was able to get something from Amoeba. I would spend hours and hours finding the perfect album to buy. I discovered artists like Joan Jett, Ike and Tina Turner, Tupac, Bob Dylan, Sly and the Family Stone, and Smashing Pumpkins in Amoeba’s aisles. I bought movies here and fell in love with films from League of Their Own to Signs. I asked the staff what the greatest album in the world was, and discovered opera by asking the scariest, toughest looking man what album made him most happy. I fell in love with music here. I was raised at Amoeba. It breaks my heart that I won’t be able to bring my kids to the same place I discovered music and art. The place I felt most comfortable and understood.
