Took this selfie after my hour long live talk with Ashtin Berry @thecollectress last week, because I wanted to document how very inspired I felt after listening to her perspective on the hospitality industry. Her point of view is refreshing for an industry that is often so content celebrating stars while overlooking the complex issues at hand. I'm inspired by Ashtin's constant strive to break open the narrative patterns we're using to justify harmful structures. This all sounds very abstract, and I could go into more details, instead I suggest you read the transcript of our talk which you find on feministfoodclub.com, because she explains this so much better than me.

I started the series of livetalks for the @feministfoodclub really because I felt an urgent need to discuss issues and solutions that gastronomy needed in the crisis. It also helped me to cover up my own sudden loss of work (and purpose). When the shutdown came, I was about to publish the 2020 best of berlin guide, we had planned the next coaching event for the ffc, and I had just been in talks for a series of feminist workshops. While all of this isn't cancelled, just postponed, I needed something to give me structure. After six weeks and sixteen talks, the series has gone from discussing instant solutions to broader topics and given me the chance to connect with people who's work I admire, and explore questions that are unfortunately often excluded from the conversation about food, especially in Germany: worker's rights, racism, sexism and classism, and how to push ourselves from focussing on the individual to acknowledging the systems behind it all.
My next talk is coming up on Sunday, journalist @mayukh.sen and I will discuss how the Corona crisis is going to change food media.
