I thought, “Wow, that’s the most beautiful couple I’ve ever seen.” Years later, we got to know each other and became friends—though I hesitate to suggest that was at all remarkable, because the truth was, everybody who Peter met became his friend, and he treated everyone the same way. I came to know him as one of the most generous photographers ever—when I told him how much I loved the picture he had taken of Truman Capote and Bobby Beausoleil in San Quentin, a few days later a print of it arrived in the mail, signed with his own blood. I did a story with Minnie in Montauk for Italian Vogue one time, and they wanted to commission Peter to do a collage. He said sure, and the next day when I returned from work, I found him lying in the middle of the living room floor, wearing a sarong, completely surrounded by photographs of Minnie and their time together. Peter lived close by, so he'd just wandered over, made himself comfortable and got to work.
