Do you see a long, narrow shape resembling the Golden State?⁣ ⁣ This infrared image was captured by our Spitzer Space Telescope on Jan. 25, 2020, just five days before Spitzer officially ended its mission. The red and blue bands on either side of the image represent two different wavelengths of light; the gray area shows both wavelengths. ⁣ ⁣ This nebula is located about 1,000 light-years from Earth. The visible light comes from gas in the nebula being heated by a nearby, extremely massive star known as Xi Persei, or Menkib. Spitzer's infrared view reveals a different feature: warm dust, with a consistency similar to soot, that is mixed in with the gas.
