We got #PorterTheSteer at 10 months old, he’s 19 months old now and he’s currently enjoying the sunshine, sweet feed, and love and attention at @browsey_acres until we harvest him at 30 months. Our family chooses to eat meat (I tried vegan for 8 months and it just wasn’t the lifestyle for me) but we also choose to take emotional responsibility for our lifestyle as well. We believe that if we are going to kill animals for food, we should take on the responsibility to make sure they have a life worth living and are harvested with respect in the most painless way possible. We love on all our animals, inevitably get attached, but we choose to suffer in the end so the animals we eat don’t have to. We don’t want our steers to feel anxiety around people so we pet them, brush them, and apply all natural fly spray to their whole body multiple times a day to make sure they feel secure comfortable and happy. When our steer’s day to give back comes, we all say our tearful goodbyes and Trav insists on doing the deed himself. We have a mobile butcher show up to help us process him on site so we can spare our steer the stress of transport. Our steer is then quartered up and taken away to a local family butcher we trust. It is not an easy task but I am proud we take it upon ourselves so that our children understand what their decision to eat meat truly means. Nothing is wasted in our home, we give thanks to Kobe every night at dinner. Someday soon we’ll be giving thanks to Porter.
