In an exclusive PODCAST interview, ZOO Magazine
caught up with Belgian artist Johan Tahon to discuss the current situation, the Artist workplace, his art and the creative process. Born in 1965, Tahon studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and has been widely exhibited in Belgium, the Netherlands, Hungary, Turkey, and Italy, Germany, USA and recently in Switzerland.
With a distinct link between his personal experience and trauma, Tahon’s artwork consists of organic figures that express even the most complex of concepts and emotions. In this discussion, the artist describes his process of forging figures and breaking them down to build them up again to create a new and always unusual composition as well as the gift that an accident can be when working with ceramics. Chatting about where he works, Tahon recounts the medieval church gifted to him by the city of Oudenaarde, Belgium and the relevance the setting has to his artistic practice.

In this interview Tahon describes being an introvert in these surreal times, the uncertainty and precarious nature of the situation and the ambiguous future for the place for art and culture in the post-pandemic sphere. “You think about the suffering but you also think about what will happen afterwards, how will the economics be? Will there be the same place for art and culture as there was before the crisis?” asks Johan.
