Lualeni and her herd may be late to the party, but they still know how to make a grand entrance! Because she was orphaned when she was just three months old, she didn’t have the opportunity to grow up in the wild alongside her own family, but her story has finally come full circle. After being in our care for over a decade, first at the Nursery and then at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, she’s finally back where she belongs — living wild in Tsavo alongside some her closest friends. And that tiny calf you see, running along at an admirable clip? That’s Lulu, Lualeni’s firstborn daughter! Babies like Lulu are the ultimate symbol of the success of our Orphans’ Project, testament to just how seamlessly our orphans are able to live as wild elephants.
