Like many snakes in the family Colubridae, it is rear fanged, which means it has two grooved teeth in the rear of its mouth and a Duvernoy's gland that produces venom. The venom in the red vine snake, like most rear-fanged snakes, is not dangerous to humans. There are two notable exceptions: the boomslang and the twig snake, both of which have killed well-known herpetologists with their bites.
