Photos by @jasperdoest | Toshikazu Nobuhara, manager of the Awaji Island Monkey Center, feeds mikan oranges to Japanese macaques. After World War II, monkey parks were established in Japan to help the recovery of the monkey population and keep monkeys away from human habitations. Such provisioning with the absence of natural enemies has boosted monkey numbers. They’re so abundant now that more than 19,000 are culled in the wild each year to prevent the animals from raiding farmers’ crops. For more on this story, see the March issue of the magazine, and follow me @jasperdoest as I explore the complex human relationship with these Japanese macaques in Japan. #monkeys #monkeybusiness #monkeymadness #wildlifetourism #日本 #猿
