Malaysia is under a national lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19. Yesterday the prime minister announced we would double our self-isolation time to four weeks. It has made me appreciate being slightly out of the city centre: I love this view out of my window (image two). It doesn't normally sound as peaceful as it looks—traffic from a nearby highway is usually humming. These days birds chirp and tweet. Or there is just silence. It's a reminder of the grave situation we face in Malaysia and globally. I am fortunate that I can share this time with my partner, and that our respective families are safe. It is the one time where the most useful way of helping others is to stay at home. I’ve tried to see this as an opportunity to do the things I often struggle to find time for, from connecting with faraway friends and family to cooking and meditation. Now and again my mind’s latent anxiety surfaces, but I try to stay positive.
