Woke up to concerned texts around 2am telling us that South American was shutting down. Up till that point South America had mostly stayed out of the COVID-19 news. In a few hrs everything changed, Peru (where we crossed from a day before) closed their borders, they weren’t letting anyone leave. Chile was closing their border in 2 days, Argentina closed their border and the parks we were planning to visit. The trip was over. We took the next few days to drive straight to Santiago, Chile , and I dropped @jess.wandering off at the airport. Then did some quick and expensive negotiating at a port to find someone to store the van and put it on the next sailing back to the states. It took me months to negotiate the shipment of the vehicle to South America, and one stressful day to negotiate the shipment back to North America. In the end, I was pretty happy to call it quits early on this trip. So many things went wrong, and a lot of them stemmed from having a new, shiny vehicle. I was worried this would happen. One of my last nights in Chile, I woke up terrified when someone opened my van door on me. I’d never experienced paranoia in my life, until now. Felt like a walking target with a lot to lose. Happy to be in a safe room at home with my family. We catch up from across the house, but it’s still quite a relief. Just hoping my van makes it back now."
