He said it’s been about twenty years since he’s done an ollie. This was his first try. Scout’s honor. I was cleaning, as I’m sure we’ve all been doing during this time of quarantine (shout-out to all my fellow anxiety-cleaners out there) and I found my old skateboards. It’s been a while for me too, but I figured that muscle memory was still in there somewhere. It took some time to feel it again, but then something in the sequence became familiar and it clicked. The roads have been pretty empty near us, so we had the whole street to ourselves. Hooting and hollering and laughing. Man, why did I stop doing this? We rode past a house where there was a family outside with a dog and a kid. I locked eyes with the dad for a split second and I started getting feelings that everyone was coming outside or looking out their windows at us like we were hooligans. But then I realized I was being paranoid like I would get when I was a TEENAGER OH MY GOD I’M A TEENAGER AGAIN WITH THE BOY I HAVE A CRUSH ON. We stopped for a minute and Brian said, “Man, this is making me want a Gatorade.” And he started laughing. And I started laughing. And my heart felt so full and I loved him so much in that moment. We skated for hours, until it was dark and we had to go inside. It was a good feeling and those feel few and far between these days. We’ve been skating everyday and I’m thankful to find this again. Yeah, I don’t have the courage I once had, but god do I feel cool while I’m doing it and I haven’t felt cool in a while.
