Algar do Carvao, as shown in the first image, is a dormant volcano which is one of only 3 on Earth that can be explored inside on foot. From stepping inside, you can spot moss and vegetation coating the crater walls; a distinct dripping noise echoes throughout. Above, the incredible chimney reveals the sky with light filtering into the ‘Cathedral’ where remarkable silica stalactites hang - some of which are the biggest in the world. It was a unreal sight to behold. The feeling of standing inside one of earths vents that was once active - filled with lava bubbling away for millions of years - was staggering to believe. Across the island, we discovered more craters surrounded by green prairies.
