⬆️ These are the spores of a parasite called Henneguya salminicola, and scientists say the unique organism is the first animal found that doesn't need oxygen to live. The discovery expands the definition of what an animal can be. “In our work, we have shown that there is at least one multicellular animal that does not have the genetic toolkit to use oxygen,” says Stephen Atkinson, senior research associate at Oregon State University. The tiny parasite lives in salmon tissue, and researchers don't know for certain what the parasite relies on instead of oxygen, but Atkinson said he assumes it absorbs molecules from its host that have already produced energy.
