Trying out bows at my favorite NYC playground, @tarisioauctions ! 😌 ————————————————————————
Here are two videos of two different bows - one of which I'm interested in, and the other one I've been lucky to have been playing on lately. It's hard to hear through the video, but can you guess which one I'm more familiar with? Comment your guesses down below! 🎶 ————————————————————————
Trying out bows/instruments is an exciting and tricky thing to do - on one hand, if you are interested in buying one, it's a professional, financial & spiritual commitment that you'll want to be sure of - but even if you end up not buying one, you'll still be able to learn a ton from just playing with an instrumental tool that is different from what you play on day to day. ————————————————————————
When trying out new bows, I try to cover all kinds of techniques in order to have a solid understanding of the abilities of the bow. Some things I like to play: some Bach (requires nuance), something strong in articulation (for example Prokofiev or Beethoven), something fast & spiccato (for example Mozart), some Paganini (because, bow control!!!), and a lot of excerpts of melodious, passionate character (for example Brahms or Kreisler), in addition to some basic scales & single notes to get a feel of the bow's abilities. ————————————————————————
What I look out for is: -a certain degree of bow flexibility
-possibilities in color, density & warmth of sound
-how well the bow speaks in different volumes (muffled vs clear sound)
-bow weight (which has a lot to do with the next point...)
-bow comfortability, aka how comfortable it is to guide the bow (some bows sort of "play themselves", some others don't. Thank you @tarisioauctions for letting me play! 🤗
