Because, while Valentine’s Day is a day of celebration for so many, it’s also a day of immense, bottomless, soul-shattering tragedy for some. For everyone living in #Parkland, and the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, February 14th isn’t a day for cards and candy. It’s a day filled with horror and trauma and loss. 17 people died in the hallways of a high school two years ago because our lawmakers refuse to act on making the public safer. Just this week, Mitch McConnell bragged on live television about how he wouldn’t even look at 350+ bills that have been passed by Congress, mandatory background checks among them, because they were passed by a Democratic Congress. AND (let’s not forget) because he takes so much money from the NRA. He’s politicizing the safety of our kids. Of schools + movie theaters + concerts + places of worship, despite the fact that over 90% of Americans agree on sensible reform. A “well regulated” right to bear arms is what’s prescribed in the Constitution. But he won’t regulate at ALL because he thinks his right to corporate kickbacks is more important than your kids. More important than the kids lost at MSD. More important than the kids lost EVERY DAY in this country to preventable deaths by guns. American children are 21 TIMES more likely to die by gun violence than kids in other economically similar countries. 21 times. @michaelfmoore wrote something about the tragic Valentine that McConnell has effectively signed as a death warrant, and thrown in the face of our nation’s children. And I haven’t been able to get out of my head... He said, “for [the MSD kids], this will never be Valentines Day. I hope they know that they are, and always will be, loved by us — but that love will remain empty and hollow if we fail to change who we are and the society we’ve created for them.
