We are proud coaches of a black owned skating school based in Brampton, Ontario in Canada. All of us coaches have competed on the international and national stage and are continuing to flourish in our own right. . . It was not long ago that people with brown skin had no place in society or could play sports. Black people had to fight their way into being accepted and recognized. There are still places people of color are fighting for rights, equality and just plain human decency. Today you are still hearing about racial discrimination, harassment and bullying in sports and institutions turning a blind eye. It is sad . . As a coach and a former athlete we are always told to have a positive mindset and use that to propel you. So, I look at this photo and I just feel so happy and honoured to have such a hardworking team of people in my skating school. Each of us coaches is a representation of breaking barriers and stigmatism in a sport that did not have many people who looked like us. We all have done so much amazing things for the sport of Figure Skating. We are the epitome that no matter what you look like, you belong and you have a place to shine your amazing light on the world. . . So, I encourage any child no matter what you look like to pick up a pair of skates and try Figure Skating. We thank all those amazing athletes before us who paved the way and to those people who continue to pave the way.
