As this calf gets larger, it will be able to hold its breath for about five minutes at a time. While the calf surfaced for air, its mother stayed below, floating with perfect buoyancy in the water column for nearly 20 minutes. When the calf dove back down to inspect us, it was our responsibility to move slowly and show respect, to remain calm so that mother and calf were never alarmed by our presence. Tourism lies at the heart of the economy in many parts of the world, especially on small tropical islands. For the welfare of wildlife, it is imperative that tourism practices are also responsible and ethical.
