In the past 4 years he has emerged as a dominant figure in the ultramarathon — a race broadly defined as anything longer than the standard marathon’s 26.2 miles. Walmsley broke his own course record in June at Western States, the world’s oldest 100-mile trail race. In completing it, Walmsley ran almost 4 consecutive marathons up and down Northern California’s snowy mountains and scorched canyons at an 8.5-minute-mile pace. He will compete on Feb. 29 in Atlanta for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. It will be the first traditional marathon he has ever run.
