I have come to realize that African American history is actually American history.  The two cannot be separated. The roots of American music come out of the blues folk and gospel traditions of music that are fundamental to the African American experience.  Toni Morrison's stories are American stories that feature black characters.  The American economy was launched with the labor of black slaves in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.  Vast sectors of wealth were created with this slave economy.
