He lives with a rare genetic condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa (aka EB), which causes his skin to be incredibly fragile. It essentially makes the skin on 80 percent of his body tear apart and blister, leaving his bare skin exposed and prone to painful infection. Imagine if most of your body had to be wrapped in bandages because you’ve been burned in a fire; that’s what John lives with every day. As a result, he lives most of his life confined to his home and outings are rare, so it was a great privilege for me to have him attend one of our recent concerts. —With the help of Sing Me a Story Foundation @smasfoundation I was entrusted to take a story John had written about his best friend, a super cool cat named Romeo, and put it into a song. John and his family joined me on stage at @theparamountny to sing it along with thousands of Soulrockers. It was one of the highlights of my year to meet him and share this magical moment of healing and love. To experience his joy was an absolute gift.
