It's absolutely gut-wrenching to find out he fought his illness for 3 years. If you ever read his book, Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road, you also know how challenging his life was. He endured some of the most hardship you could imagine. It's a remarkable book about an extraordinary journey into mindfulness healing. Neil was special, one of a kind, a legend as a musician, a writer, and as a human. Honestly, I don't know many drummers that wouldn't cite him as one of the main drumming influences on the planet, EVER... PERIOD! Most certainly in my generation. There are so many talented artists that paved the way for us but Neil did more for the evolution of Rock drumming than anyone. He had an undeniable unique style and sound all his own. He had crazy grooves, chops, tricks, and flair but the orchestration of his drum parts really set him apart. Simply genius! Those parts are so integral to Rush's music, and the very reason they are one of the most iconic bands of all time. Go give 'Hemispheres' a spin if you haven't done so lately. It still blows my mind. Oh yeah, he wrote all the lyrics for the band as well! I remember when I first bought 'Hemispheres' after my KISS phase had ended and I ran up to my Mom with the record... "Mom, you have to read these lyrics... they're not talking about Love Guns, they're talkin' about some deep things, like The Trees and stuff" I don't think she could ever get past Geddy's voice. lol but I sure could. I probably drove her absolutely nuts singing the verse to 'Temples of Syrinx' at the top of my lungs. I could go on and on at how much of an impression Neil and Rush's music made on me. It's gonna be a weird place without "The Professor" around. My sincere condolences go out to Geddy, Alex, family, friends and the millions of fans around the world.
