Often times I arrive after the lights go out and I give quick hellos or hugs to the ushers and then nestle into my little perch, seated on the stairs at the back of the Brooks Atkinson Theater...where for the past 4 years, @waitressmusical has had a home. On any given night you might find any combination of stage managers or new cast members learning the show, or one of us creatives popping in, sharing that space at the back of the room...trying to stay invisible so as to not disturb what happens in this sacred place.
I love these stairs. I love this house. I love the warmth of the velvet seats and the glow of the beautiful stage lights. I love the people up there on stage, shining in them. I love the familiarity of this story and I love this music and I love more than anything watching the audience watch our show. I love the sniffles of the emotional ones. I love the belly laughs of the ones who didn’t expect to laugh at alI. I love the outbursts that can happen when someone recognizes bits of themselves or someone they love on stage. I love watching the ripples of laughter physically wash over the audience. It has been my favorite seat in the house for 4 years.
I started working on this show the year I moved to New York City and I don’t really know a time where Waitress in some form or another wasn’t woven into my life in New York. I don’t know how to say goodbye to this chapter, but I do know how to take it all in as a grateful observer and so that’s what I’m doing.
I had two tickets to sit in seats tonight and yet I still found myself on the stairs in the back, watching all of you watch what we made.
Dreams come and they go...
