The Saint John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church, in San Francisco, was founded on the belief that John Coltrane, the jazz musician, is a divine being. "It appears to be a church like any other," Hua Hsu writes, "until you notice that the candles surround a copy of 'Blue Train,' and that the paintings on the wall depict Coltrane in regalia." The church, now in its 50th year, seems more radiant and hopeful than ever—a refuge from the rhythms of the present.
