Being based on land instead of a ship gives me the opportunity to photograph penguin colonies at dusk and dawn. I’m not a fan of flash, but occasionally—when really necessary—I use a bit of underexposed fill flash. I always pay attention to the reaction of the animals. If I see any negative impact, I stop and look for an alternative light solution. One beautiful morning on Sea Lion Island, I was blessed with an amazing sunrise. The position of the sun and the configuration of the terrain did not allow me to work with silhouettes, so I decided to try a bit of fill flash with the penguins. It’s extremely challenging to get it right because their shiny belly feathers are highly reflective and it’s really easy to “burn out” the whites—and consequently all the detail. I was surprised to see that the penguins were actually attracted to the light and started gathering around me.
