Deforestation has ravaged about 24,000 square miles of the Amazon rainforest—the equivalent of 8.4 million soccer fields—over the past decade, according to a report by the Royal Statistical Society, a British organization that analyzed data from the Brazilian government. Farmers, loggers and miners in recent years have taken advantage of relaxed controls on deforestation in Brazil and seized miles and miles of land for commercial development.
