Sir Alex Ferguson's words in his autobiography describing the moment he first set eyes on Giggs in the flesh, in a trial match at the Cliff in 1987, says it all. "A gold miner who has searched every part of the river or mountain then suddenly finds himself staring at a nugget could not feel more exhilaration then I did watching Giggs that day," he writes. "I shall always remember my first sight of him, floating over the pitch at the Cliff so effortlessly that you could have sworn his feet weren't touching the ground. He carried his head high and he looked as relaxed and natural on the park as a dog chasing a piece of silver paper in the wind." The youngster was promptly enrolled in the club's school of excellence, signed schoolboy terms on his 14th birthday and was unleashed in senior football 17 — launching an extraordinary and record-breaking first-team career spanning 24 seasons.
