'[I want] to shape the TV screen canvas
as precisely as Leonardo
as freely as Picasso
as colourfully as Renoir
as profoundly as Mondrian
as violently as Pollock
and as lyrically as Jasper Johns'
- Nam June Paik, 1969 📺
Nam June Paik (1932-2006) played a leading role in bridging the gap between art and technology. He was born in Seoul, Korea (now South Korea) but lived and worked in Japan, Germany and the United States. His travels led him to question national borders and cultural differences in an increasingly connected world. Continually innovative, experimental and playful, his art encompassed a variety of artistic genres, from sculpture and performance to music and live broadcasting.
Next week at Tate Modern, artist collective East London Cable will live record an immersive performance inspired by #NamJunePaik's use of television in art. Contributors will showcase sound, moving image, dance and performance works and the night will be simultaneously screened, performed and broadcast. Click the link in our bio to book.
📷 Nam June Paik's 'Sistine Chapel', a breath-taking audio-visual collage created with 34 projectors, fills an entire room of the artist's major exhibition at Tate Modern. Until 9 February 2020.
