"On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal" by Naomi Klein ( @NaomiAKlein on Twitter )

This is one of the most important books that I have ever read, and it undoubtedly lit a fire in me. For many of us, facing the truth about climate chaos can be so overwhelming, saddening, and frustrating, to the point where we feel hopeless. Or at the very least, unable to really sit with this truth for long enough to figure out what actions we can take that will truly have an impact. For me, this book shifted me away from this disempowering dichotic into feelings of bold, expansive vision and possibility.

One of the most important points of the book, (that my friend @favianna1 has also been telling me about this past year) is that climate chaos is actually deeply connected to and actually the result all of the other social issues that we are up against. The fight is not separate. Just as with other systems of oppression, the root causes are white supremacy, colonization, patriarchy, and this fundamental ideology of domination and extraction. Just as this country has extracted without abandon from Native Americans, African Americans, and poor and working class people of all races and genders, we have pillaged the Earth in our constant capitalist quest for more. And the effects of climate chaos are primarily caused by the Global North (led by the U.S.) and primarily impact the Global South (which is disproportionately POC). Even in the U.S., the dirtiest industries are most often polluting poor Black and Brown neighborhoods.

This book, and specifically The Green New Deal, poses what is truly our only hope to avert the complete catastrophe that will be caused by climate chaos. The answer is climate justice. The recognition that those who are most affected must be centered, and that the only way to actually make significant enough change in our carbon emissions is to drastically restructure our domination and extraction economy to one that actually serves all people. And this must be done as it always has been, by building strong enough social movements to contest the powers that be. #GreenNewDeal
