They gave us life, nurtured us, raised us and eventually set us free to discover ourselves. 👵👵👵 On this day I am especially grateful for my late mother Helga Anna-Johanna Anker. She passed away this past June, quietly at home while enjoying her needle point. No pain, no burden; an ideal transition. 🌝 Born near Dresden, East Germany in 1933 she met my father Wallace Robert in 1955 in Berlin. As a phlebotomist she and her friends went to a social venue that allowed the tables to telephone each other, an old school dating app. Wally rang Helga and loved ensued. ❤️❤️❤️ Having been born into the atrocity of the Third Reich and witnessed the destruction of war, she knew what hardship was. Moving to San Francisco with a young man was her chance at a new life. As an immigrant she reminded us to work hard. As a child of an immigrant I witnessed prejudice towards a woman with an accent. Both of these experiences shaped who I am and my world view. In her 86 years she saw joy and happiness through her family. My older sisters Kim and Denise taught me to be kind. My brother Steve was my partner in adventure and minor league sibling pranks. Together the six of us were a happy family. The carbon that constituted my parents is now being recycled. Their souls and energy is carried forward by their children and their legacy. Thanks Mom and Dad for believing in me.
