For thousands of years, Cuban Crocodiles thrived in the Zapata Swamp, the largest coastal wetland in the Caribbean Islands, but unchecked hunting decimated their numbers to some 3,000 in the wild today. Not only are these top predators vital for keeping the food chain in check, but they are also important ecosystem engineers that shape and maintain mangrove ecosystems by excavating underwater caves and canals. Today they are threatened by hunting, habitat destruction, and hybridization with American Crocodiles in areas where the two species have been forced into closer proximity. Losing the Cuban Crocodile would have significant repercussions both ecologically and culturally. Fortunately, a captive breeding sanctuary was established in Zapata Swamp in 1959, providing an important reservoir for reestablishing the crocodile in the wild.
