“Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia” by Sabrina Strings
#
So grateful for this book. It is a truly remarkable piece of work that offers great insight into the history of fatphobia and its origins in the fear and hatred of the Black body. It offers a really important account of how so many of the stereotypes that are still ever-present today came to be. An important historical analysis for anyone interested in these subjects. #SabrinaStrings #FearingTheBlackBody

For many years I’d heard the idea that thinness was not originally valued in the U.S. and Europe. And that larger bodies, in women, were considered closer to the “ideal” beauty standard. This book clearly charts how that came to be.

Another idea that became very stark to me in reading this book, is how the language and ideas around morality and religion are still so linked to stereotypes today. Beliefs about fat people being “lazy,” “greedy,” “immoral” and “lacking self control” are still incredibly common. Especially when it comes to Black people. Even foods and food packaging having references referring to them to as “sinful”, “guilty pleasures,” “innocent” and invoking religious imagery became especially ridiculous when seeing the origins of it clearly spelled out. When we are dieting or losing weight, people promote moral assumptions, saying “Ugh, you’re so good and I’m so bad!” Many of us rarely stop to think about how these ideas came to be (let alone how they still currently marginalize people). From a historical perspective, this offers clear insight.
