Veterans of wars. When my grandfather was on his death bed he expressed to my mother he wanted me to have his flight jacket he wore as an ace fighter pilot in the Navy WWII, battle of Midway, Marianas Turkey-shoot etc I said no thank you. He had been harsh to my mother and her sisters when they were young. His pain and rage, from so much conflict, left a lasting impression that was passed down to my mother and then inherited by me and my siblings. For this, I was not willing to forgive. After he died, a fed-ex package arrived at my door. I opened it and was instantly flooded with regret. Every Vet-day I think of him, and my own father (Naval attack pilot) and my fathers father (Air Force Flying Tigers) ; All military leaders, each a decorated aviator, spanning WWII to Vietnam. This is my family. Although I have no respect for wars designed for profit and empire building, I do have respect for some of the personnel involved. For me this is a cognitive dissonance; A conflict in myself I have yet to resolve, and it flares up so acutely every November 11th.
