Ten babies have been born in 2019 alone.  In November of 2018, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species reclassified the species for the first time in nearly 25 years—this time from Critically Endangered to Endangered. This is a testament to the colossal efforts of those dedicated to protecting the species, particularly those of Virunga’s rangers and an intensive monitoring campaign to protect these magnificent animals at all costs:  Virunga rangers carried out 31,000 patrols over 5.5 years. They covered on foot the equivalent of walking the circumference of the Earth every year, or more than half the distance between the Earth and the moon.
