The newest cryosphere report from the IPCC emphasizes the important role that Earth's frozen places have played in slowing down climate change by absorbing heat from carbon emissions. However, over the past few decades, sea ice has steadily decreased in surface area and has also become a lot thinner. The melting process has accelerated faster than anticipated. Scientists predict summers in the Arctic will be completely free of ice in the next 10 to 20 years.
