Photo by @daisygilardini | The American black bear is widespread, and its population is twice that of all other bear species combined. Contrary to their name, not all black bears are black. There is a wide range of fur color among individuals, from black and brown to cinnamon and, in the case of the Kermode bear, a cream-colored white.
Black bears mainly live in boreal forests, like this one in Canada, but they can also adapt to subtropical areas, such as Florida and Mexico, and cold subarctic areas like Alaska.
The species is classified as an opportunist omnivore, meaning black bears will eat whatever they find but rarely hunt other large mammals. They have a mostly vegetarian diet.
