AD| Hop on a boat in Marseille and you’ll soon be in the beautiful Frioul archipelago. The first island you’ll see is this one named ‘If’ (unfortunately the other islands aren’t named ‘and’, ‘or’, ‘but’). The island is now uninhabited but it was once home to France’s most notorious prisoners who were locked up in the fortress that is now my character’s sandcastle. The prison was also home to one of literary’s greatest characters– The Count of Monte Cristo, which is partly why the island is so popular with tourists today. As you can imagine there’s some obvious similarities to San Francisco’s Alcatraz, but unlike Alcatraz, no prisoner ever tried to escape from Château d'If...apart from Edmond Dantès of course #ExploreFrance @lecmn #lecmn #Chateaudif #CMN
