The remains of the Bahia Honda Bridge, originally designed to be an overseas railroad system from Miami to Key West. The project was abandon after being ravaged by “Labor Day” hurricane in 1935, killing hundreds of WWI veterans that were working on the project. This is what’s left, all those years later, still standing in taters. I photographed this while working on a story in 2016 for @ナショナルジオグラフィック on America’s National Parks and the effects climate change is having on them. My work in Florida had me focused on the Everglades but I detoured briefly south to the Florida bay when I came across this scene. For the beautiful state of Florida, and the surrounding states and countries in the Caribbean, increased storms and ocean sea rise are an ever increasing concern. Seeing the mass devastation over recent years is nothing short of heart breaking, wishing everyone well in the wake of the most recent destructive hurricane.
