The feathers have a sheen to them that’s almost metallic, so it made sense to use a larger light source to give the shiny surface something to reflect. A second source provided some fill for the shadows, while a third produced the complimentary color behind the feather. (Source size is always described relative to the subject, and in this case, the source was only 6 inches in size—three times the size of the two inch feather)I also employed focus stacking to create more depth of focus. 78 images were captured and blended to create the final image.⠀ ⠀ Focus stacking is a process of capturing a series of images all focused on a different part of the frame and then merging them together to create an image that is precisely sharp over a given area—in this case, part of the spool of thread. This is very different from the concept of depth of field because rather than the PERCEIVED focus you obtain with depth of field, focus stacking delivers ACTUAL focus. (As an aside, even the smallest f/stop on any lens would not deliver anywhere near the depth of focus obtainable with focus stacking. Some cameras—like the Z-Series or the D850—can capture the stack of images automatically!⠀ ⠀ For the next several months, I plan to light and photograph small things and capture the same subject at different magnifications—10x, 5x, and 1X, or life-size. Hopefully, each image will stand on its own as an interesting photograph.
