Growing up, I always had strong opinions about how I dressed. The thing I cared about most was being comfortable and feeling like myself - pretty simple. As I got older, things started to change, especially when social media came around. I started to feel pressure to have things I didn’t *really* want or need. As I started making my own money, I felt even more pressure to buy expensive things, keep up with trends and project this image of “I’m a boss!” (aka bosses have fancy things, so I must have fancy things!) It was an exhausting, empty experience filled with constant anxiety and an obsessive pursuit of perfection. I realized I was hurting myself, so I decided to make a change. I’ve spent the last two years reevaluating my shopping habits in small steps and asking myself questions like: Why do you feel the need to shop? Are you using shopping to avoid something? Are you trying to please other people? Is this trend something you actually want to experiment with? How can you shop your closet and restyle things you already have? For me, getting dressed is a creative experience and the pressure to “keep up” robbed me of that process. Now, I save shopping for special occasions or when I really need something. When I do shop, I mostly shop secondhand. I treasure the wardrobe I have and I love figuring out new ways to wear things. I pay attention to moments when I think “Oh, it would be so cool to have X!” and wait to see if it’s fleeting or something I continue to think about for months. I know what I’m spending my money on and the deeper why. I don’t feel guilt or regret after a purchase. Most importantly, I allow myself to play! The photos above were taken at a vintage store in Paris. I’m wearing a tie dye shirt I made myself and I’m moments away from being THRILLED about my finds: a winky face sweatshirt and a piece I’m calling “cool art teacher duster.” The pleased smile you see is a real one - it’s the little girl inside of me I ignored for years in order to be more of an “adult.” The little girl who’s very much alive and has been right about a lot of things all along. Thanks little Ingrid, you’re the REAL boss and I love you.❤️
