​The purple swamphen’s feet may look oversized, but those long toes serve are important- they help these birds 'walk on water'. Actually they help to keep the bird's weight spread out as they walk on surface vegetation around marshes and lakes. They also help to grasp onto their food while they eat! Found in eastern and northern Australia, this species makes its home in freshwater swamps, streams, and marshes, where it can feed on reeds and small animals like frogs and snails. While it doesn’t feast on them all of the time, the swamphen is also a well-known egg stealer, and will occasionally eat ducklings, when it can catch them. This species has a very large home range and is not believed to be at risk for extinction, however, it does face a number of threats in the wild, one of which is poisoning via pesticides. Chemicals used to exterminate rodents often make their way into the environment where they are consumed by animals that birds eat, leading to illness, and in some cases, even death. You can help protect this and many other bird species by eliminating pesticide use in your yard!
