So it's a photo that celebrates maintenance work, something we talked a lot about before the shoot. We read Mierle Laderman Ukeles Manifesto for Maintenace Art -- "The life force is concerned with cyclicality, care, and regeneration; the death force sounds to me a lot like “disrupt.” Obviously, some amount of both is necessary, but one is routinely valorized, not to mention masculinized, while the other goes unrecognized because it has no part in “progress.” Also, when I think about what the future of fashion might be, how it might become less consumerist and more sustainable, I think of the sweaters and clothes and quilts and rugs my mom makes. Fashion isn’t just about buying things, it’s about community, culture, and creativity. About sharing and repurposing, making and mending.
