37 yrs ago (8/25/82) marks an important period for me. I left PerformingArtsSchool to try a *gulp* Southern Baptist Christian School (nightmare)—-summer was done & today was school shopping day. Penny Loafers✅ Sweater✅ Tailored gray slacks w pleats ✅—-Because of #MorrisDay’s massive influence I begged for some #Baggies—not exactly #HammerPants but way more hip...I was denied 😑 (I should “look more business....and less #LouisJordan” —“dad who?!”)—so 4 hours of oxford shirts, rulers, sharpeners, coats, bookbinders at cherry hill mall in nj —-I saw it on display at #ListeningBooth record shop: A humorous animated Morris Day poster checking his (Rolex?🤷🏾‍♂️)what the...—in my well known “Prince Fathered Hip Hop” theories “Inventing Swag” is easily in my top 5: Morris was name dropping all the finer thangs in life 15 years before Bad Boy Records made it LAW. I had zero clue this album was even out!! I was tuned into black Radio & the entire summer belonged to #GapBand (GB4 was UNAVOIDABLE & woulda easily nabbed best lp of 82 if it weren’t for #1999 & uh...oh yeah #Thriller) not to mention #PlanetRock & #TheMessage froze you in your tracks when they first came out. I asked the store clerk to play something cause I just knew there was NOTHING better than “Cool” from their 81 lp. He played me the 2nd cut #7779311...& thus starts an amazing run of “wait...are they allowed to do that?!” questions I’ll have about music for the next 5 years concerning Prince’s creations. Mind you I’m 11—(musically I was 22) so as a drummer NOTHING prepared me for that kind of rule breaking. WTII? Truly marks the beginning of RnB’s courtship w hip hop: new synth sounds✅ aspirational narrative✅ skits✅ ghostwriting✅dissing enemies✅drum machine madness✅troublesome relationships w women 😑—-blueprint all here.
