The fires now raging across the Amazon are not natural. They are part of a political crisis in which the governments of the region, most notably that of Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, has enabled the wanton destruction of formerly protected areas, including indigenous peoples' lands.
In this fire map produced by @globalforests you can see the sheer breadth and magnitude of the crisis. These are fires that are being set to clear forests for agricultural land, mainly for cattle. The satellite image shows a current example of several of these fires.
